Did you plan everything in advance?

When you are traveling in out-of-the-way places, it is often impossible to plan anything in advance.  This is Dona Lupe's in in Jirira, Bolivia.  Dona Lupe is a woman in a tiny village in Bolivia who rents rooms to travelers.  Her village has no phones or electricity, and so it is impossible to call in advance to let her know that you are coming.  But people who take in travelers in places like this are accustomed to people just showing up on their doorsteps.  We had had an especially rough day (search this website with the keywords "stranded" "salt flats" and "Bolivia"), and Dona Lupe is preparing Jordan a special late-night meal from our emergency box of Macaroni&Cheese.

Burmese Village in Northern Thailand

This is another example of having to simply show up in a location with no advanced notice.  This village is in Thailand, near the Burmese border.  We've been on a trek through the hill country with a guide, and there is simply no way in this region to phone in advance and let people know that you're coming.  But again, people in areas like this are accustomed to taking in travelers when they show up.  Notice the solar panel in the background.  This solar panel powers the village's one TV set.
